The pictures on the cover are of my grandma - Ruby Tripp Irwin - juxtaposed against photos taken by her husband - my grandpa John D. Irwin - during his tour of the Pacific in World War II.

The images of destruction of US airstrikes versus the bright spirit of my grandmother is the soul of "Fear Not" - a phrase she once said to me while we were at a Chinese restaurant together. All the songs are of facing death and tragedy in one form or another, and of not giving in to the fear.

"Where The Devil Sleeps" is drawn from the horrors of the wars during the 1990s in Yugoslavia, and the racism and hate that still exists there in the aftermath of those wars.

"Beans & Rice" is a depiction of World War I. That war set all of those other events in motion - the breakup of Yugoslavia, World War II. The image of the fields of horses that decayed to form swamps sticks in my memory.

"Little Feet" tells an old family story of "Little Howard" a boy who drowned while sailing on the Sacramento River. His body was never found - only his sailor's shoes. At his funeral, the pastor accused the parents of condemning their boy to hell due to their sins. The boy's grandfather, infuriated, stood up and began to strangle him in front of the congregation.
